I use a couple of Taylor thermometers with probes (use for barbecue) and a Thermapen instant read. I bring a pan of water to a boil, which at my elevation is 212 degrees and place all probes in the boiling water. One of the Taylors is off by 4 and the other off by 6. The thermapen is dead on. I nuke a cup of water for 30-40 seconds, put all probes in the water and compare it to the temperature gauge I want to calibrate. I am using two GQF dial thermometers which only go up to 125 degrees and are adjustable. If yours are not adjustable then note the difference. If yours is a digital thermometer without some form of probe, my technique will not work. If you have a thermometer which does not go higher than 212 degrees, do not put it in boiling water.

Hopes this helps.

I don't know if this will help or not, but if you can immerse the probe in to water....

I saw a digital meat-type thermometer at Wal Mart and the back of the package said to calibrate...

Fill a small bowl with ice then add cold water to fill. Let it sit for a couple minutes then insert probe. It should read exactly 32°.

I can't use this on mine as it doesn't have a separate probe. But maybe someone can benefit from this info.

I really appreciate your posting this. I have 2 thermometers, 1 reads 102 degrees and the cheap one that came with my LG reads 98. I calibrated as you said, and the LG one is exactly at 32 degrees. I so want to get this right!!

so nither one of my thromoamters will be able to use these maythdos , as i have a ectrince one with a prob , but the prob is wrilees so it has batters , and the GQF thromo has the plastic base

But i think my GQF thromo is the most acrrte of the 2

I work in a research lab, and we calibrate our thermometers both ways, with boiling water (212) and a cup of crushed ice with just enough water to make it slushy (32).
