How to Catch a Chicken....

Well I only have five chickens but when I want to get them back into the coop I use a rake. One of those big plastic leaf rakes.

No really, I walk behind them and stick the rake out to block them from going where I don't want them to go, and keep them going towards the coop. It works pretty good for me.

All good ideas purple, we try to let then stay til sundown and they all go back in on their own. If for some reason we have to get them in early. treats help and hearding with long white
sticks( arm extensions) helps.

Uhhhh can I borrow that coon dog purple?

Now that you mention it Tx the sticks help out a lot too. Sort like
a shepard and his or her flock.

Sure you can borrow Sandy. Just be warned. She loves to eat and
gives big kisses.

My kids have little nets to catch insects, we do catch "treats" for the chickens and they will PICK the grasshoppers out of the net, but go into the run with that net waving about - and they ALL head for the coop - no questions asked!

We normally just wait for them to go in by themselves at sunset - but use the above method if we need them in earlier.

Mine come for treats, the great gulible girls, but if yours think the coop means safety, an umbrella will be very effective. They think the mean umbrella monster is going to eat them, and the run to the safe place. This is a great game for a rainy day if your chickens think the rose bush is safer than the coop. Chcikens run really fast from the umbrella monster.

I'll bet. Chickens are naturally afraid of anything in the air, when hawks or buzzards come over they make for the coop. So the "umbrella monster" sounds like a good idea in a pinch.

Mine normally will go in on their own but there is always one form each coop that wants to stay out and play and then the game is on. Normally my DD and I are the ones playing catch me if you can with the hens. It is normally just too funny to watch us. My don't trust us with treats, they know we are up to no good.

I love the "Umbrella Monster" story! -- I might have to try that! (thank goodness for privacy fences or my neighbors would have me on you tube for sure!!) My little dachshund has been trying to help me herd them back into the pen after they roam around awhile but she is alittle afraid of them pecking her nose!

I was able to use the butterfly net on a sparrow yesterday that came into their pen through the chicken wire and couldn't get out! They all seemed to be getting along well when I found her in there but I did catch and release her.

Still no eggs yet.....thanks for all the chicken catching tips everyone!!
