I will add that if he has clipped wings- someone may actually be missing him. If he's illegal in the area - the owners are likely very limited in ways to advertise to get him back. Do try craigslist - both in the 'for sale' and "lost and found'.

I woke up at 5:15 am, but he was already awake. I put his cheerios and grain-based cat food and water into the dog crate last night so he can get used to going in there. It's a very small yard, so we'll see...

Idk - my neighbor said the entire flock got out and the hens were killed by a dog across the street. Anyone in this neughbirhood who wanted their rooster back can surely hear him crowing

I use a head lamp to catch my birds sometimes at night if I need to, then I have both hands free. It's not super bright but works well for my use. The buttons on top let you select the mode and brightness including a red light.
