how to control flies in run

No problem! No such thing as a dumb question, except maybe the ones we don't ask! So please feel free to ask away, that's how we all learn. As the other poster has explained, DE is short for diatomaceous earth. Do a search here (see the box in the upper right hand corner of the page?) on "diatomaceous earth" or even just "DE" and you'll pull up lots of informative threads.

Welcome to the forum...I've learned oodles of useful information here.

Thanks, now I know why it is referred to as DE, I can't pronounce it OR spell it---- thanks for the info!!!

Thank you. I just ordered this and am looking forward to getting it. Our freezer failed but it kept running for a month.

And the maggots. And the flies. I can only hope the Big Stinky will take care of the byproducts.

Hi, just wondered what DE is. I use flypapers and a bottle trap: large plastic bottle with lid on, burn hole for flie to enter 2/3 way up, put in a coupla inches of water with something like cow or pig manure. Flies go in, eventually drown. Plus I use deep litter (mixed grain straw) and clean the Coop about once a month. I suppose the best would be one of those electric blue light zappers. Lol.

Hmmm. That Lime comment doesn't make sense to me....Lime has a high pH...as does chicken manure. Unless your soils there are very acidic (low pH)......I can't see why you do it. Unless the lime is suppressing something else like mites and parasites.

That thing is brilliant! Might build one myself. Yes, husbands can be useful, eh? I'd put it well away from the coops so the flies are attracted to it, rather than near the coops (if possible). And there are a lot of flies in that thing.

After I started doing this there was a noticeable drop in fly activity or it was all on or in the bottle. I also put them up during the "Blowfly Season" as we call it here, to minimise blowfly strike on my sheep. Seems to help.

I just like the bottle idea because it takes me 5 mins to make, a little longer to decide on what smelly thing to put in the water. When "full", throw it in the bin and put up another one (I hang them in the coops or on a tree nearby). With some I have set up, nothing went in them, obviously what I had put in the water was not a strong enough attractant. I thought the water is essential tho I suppose it could work without it....bit of dog food maybe or a small piece of offcut meat. Without the water you will get maggots, with the bottle (and water) idea they drown.

On second thought, the problem with the larger version is that you either have to clean it out at some stage or dispose of the whole thing.
