Can someone please explain this procedure? It is mentioned in several places, but the only discussion I found that explained part of it said that the person used dry ice in a plastic bin to make it pain free and quick. Sorry to bring up a subject like this, but really want to be prepared.

thats the best way

why exactly you want to cull??

A pair of sharp sissors works for small chicks. I prefer using a sharp pair of bipass garden shears, they are quick and clean. All other methods I have seen leave room for mistakes that lead to an extended suffering. I know it's hard to do but when nessesary it's good to be quick and clean.

The quickest and painless is a good pair of shears for a quick separation of head from body. You can even do it in a brown paper sack or some other type of bag if you don't want to look. Even though pulling the head off seems barbaric to some folks, it's quicker than letting them suffocate with dry ice or that baking soda mixture.

A Sharp pair of kitchen shears is very quick with no suffering. You can dig a hole first and just drop both parts in and cover it back up.

Okay, just to be really clear .... we are using the scissors to sever the head from the body, right?

Why does one cull a chick? Is it like a horse, a broken leg will cause it such misery that it is better to cull? I understand that if it's stomach is outside it's body that would be a time, but is there anything else that I need to be aware of?

Reference the above question, when you answer ... basic basic, not trying to be grusome / morbid just trying to learn.

Thank you.

I believe " culling" actually means to seperate or remove. A lot on here use it as a nice way to say kill. The only reasons I ever kill a chicken is if it is to be prossesed for eating, grossly deformed as in a chick, or has an injury or illness that is causing pain to the chicken and can not be cured or treated.

I will dispose/kill/cull chicks for a lack of growth/development, illness, injury, and deformities of any sort.

As they get older I will either sell off or kill any that don't fit my breeding program (hard to judge conformity when they're chicks). If they're meaty enough when killed, we'll clean'em and eat'em.

Yep .. I think the dry ice method is cruel and very unnecessary... I agree a simple frab the head and pull .. or scissors and snip... I just cant imagine putting an animal in a container and letting it slowly die....

I had to cull my first one this year that hatched eviscerated (intestines hanging out) I placed it's neck in heavy kitchen shears and covered it with a cloth. It was not easy, and I cried, but it was necessary. It is never easy, but often is a necessary kindness for the animal. It was quick.
