I am new to all of this and have been interested in how to figure out the pecking order as it is established. We have 23 8 week olds. The 2 speckled sussex are by far the friendliest. They are the first to come say hello every single time. I am just not seeing any other behaviors that make one stand out as different from the rest.

Also, we just moved them outside to the coop. We live in the country so it is fairly dark outside at night but our neighbors have one fairly bright light. Will this mess with their light/dark balance? It definitely isn't as bright as it would be if we lived in the city.

At 8 weeks they aren't likely to have a noticeable pecking order quite yet, it's still developing and still fluid.

The outside light shouldn't be a huge issue. As you noted most people have to deal with a lot more light in urban and suburban areas, but chickens kept in those situations seem to be fine with it.
