How to determine when a Rooster is too Rough

You can see if anyone is giving away a rooster. Lots of people give away great males because they can't have males or have too many. Of course, that opens up the risk of disease, but if you're comfortable with that, then it could be pretty easy to find one, especially if you put out feelers that you're looking for a nice male

Yes, I have a lot of people around me looking to get rid of Roosters. I would not take a "free" one as it probably is mean but if I find one and can go witness its behavior somewhere and the condition it is kept in I might be willing to do this once the hens are grown. I will probably give him until then to see how he does.

I wouldn't assume free means that it's aggressive. I used to give away lots of good tempered males because I couldn't justify keeping them and didn't want to eat them.

They start laying? who is they? The roosters? Roosters do not lay eggs (correct me if I interpreted that wrong) Also from personal experience, roosters can be hard to find for purchase, and are usually sold because they are mean, which is exactly what in your case, you dont want. You could try hatching some eggs and see if you get a rooster out of it. Thats how I got all of mine. 6 right now, they get along well. And like I said, i reccomend you just give them some time.
Not sure where you are but I'm close to ASHEVILLE, N.C and I'm fairly certain I have a few roos. I baby them and not mean at all. They're still young They hatched 3/3/2023. But I will not be needing more than 2. I would be happy to help you out with a roo. They are mixed breeds ( Easter eggers, araucana, comet, ISA....). IF interested when I Confirm roo .

That's so sweet of you! My boy has actually straightened up. My husband has been working with him and he is learning. Now I think its funny My girls seem to be showing signs they are ready to mate and he has no interest but I'm sure that will change.

I am glad to hear that the mating practices will mellow out as the mature, right now, it seems that chicken mating is a bit barbaric.

Mine has no interest in mating yet. He's about 18 weeks now. I assume it's coming though
Ours are 18 weeks yesterday and the boys are quite randy, have been for 2 weeks. they have started to mellow a little bit though. I wish we could free-range but we are close-ish to the road, have lots of predators, aerial and ground and the occasional dog that has run away to go on a big adventure, so we have made a huge run so they are sort of safely free-ranging.

Mine free range from 930 am to usually 7pm. They put themselves up around 7 each night and the solar door closes behind them. My new ones just started free ranging. They are 8 weeks and they come inside to sleep at night. I am praying they integrate soon so they can sleep in the coop but for now, they do not seem welcome lol
