My solution for a homemade waterer. A plastic Pure Leaf tea bottle filled with water. It was out there from July to just now without them trying to roost on it. A gallon milk jug of water would be bigger and weigh 8 lbs so would be difficult to knock off.
 
That's cheaper than the rent a coop hats...thanks for posting it. I have tried several things, currently using open top hanging feeders which suck when it rains. (but they are easier to fill)
Use a bungee ball to attach the cone to the lid. One hole centered in lid and hole at tip of cone, use your choice of ring/clip to keep cord from slipping back. Or tie a knot in end of cord or think outside of the box.
