We bought chicken grit from a local store. We are wondering how much we should give to our chickens and how often we should feed them it. We would also like some advice how to add roosting bars to our chickens' area.

Welcome to BYC.

Grit and oystershell should be offered free choice (to adults), in separate containers. For baby chicks their grit can be lightly-sprinkled over their feed -- I was taught to put on just a pinch -- as if I were salting my dinner sparingly.

There are many ways to create roosts. If you browse the coop pages section of the articles you'll see how people did it in their various coops.

Here are some photos from some of my coops:

Roost can be small limbs or pvc pipe In which I used at first they may skip off the pvc but they get it right soon pvc you don't have to worry about pest laying eggs on it but one thing is certain never use anything with 90 degree corners

We have a small coop for sleeping with a steel dogcage inside it for extra protection from the cats in our area, I might go with pvc pipes but I wanted something I wouldn't have to worry about splintering my hen's legs and also so if I needed to take the crate out for cleaning I could easily take it out as well.

I gave my 2 week old chicks grit in a suspended canning lid. I bought "chick grit" for my chicks. They eat when needed. They won't need oyster shell till they lay eggs. I built a roost out of 2x4s on end with a 3/4" x 3/4" wooden garden stake nailed to it. They are month old now.

Check out the grit dispenser Lisa Steele made (Fresh Eggs Daily). We did almost the same thing, except a plastic Perrier bottle instead of a wine bottle. Works great!
