Hello all,

A quick question regarding feeding a mixed flock. I have 7 pullets that are now 9 weeks old raised from day old chicks. They have been raised on starter feed from day one. Early last week, we added 5 20-week old ready-to-lay hens. They have started to lay as of the end of last week.

My question is this: how do I feed this flock? They share the same feeders and waterers, and currently I have been feeding all starter feed. Should I be making a switch? Should I be mixing in ground oyster shell into the feed, or is that detrimental to the younger ones? Do I provide it as a "side-dish" where all can access?

I'm learning as I go, but I am definitely loving this chicken thing!!!

Thanks for the help everyone!

Feed them all chick feed, and make oyster shells available for the ones laying.

The layers will need the calcium, and they will take some as needed. The chicks don't need it, and it could be dangerous to their kidneys, but they will (most likely) ignore the crushed shells.
