We have our duck brooder in the kitchen, with 2 ducklings that are about 1.5 weeks old. My husband cooked steak two nights ago onto the stove top. We use a cast iron pan designed to char steaks. So he was working on getting them nice and brown smoking up the entire kitchen. The ducklings noticed the smoke and freaked out totally screaming their lungs out. They must have thought the kitchen is on fire. Poor little things. We opened all the windows to get the smoke out, and that calmed them down.

Today we've decided to take Sunshine and Shadow outside for their first time. Temperature is only 65 and it was windy, but sunny. Both ducklings are rather large, Saxony ducks, so we were sure it would be fine. We did put them into the pen they will occupy once older. They had a blast eating everything and anything. Plus I had them follow me around by calling them. They have been running circle in the brooder for days now, so it must have been fun getting more space doing this. I only allowed 30 minutes of outdoor time because it was kind of windy.

They are pampered little suckers. Swimming in the bathtub each morning since day 4, with 4 dogs watching. This is followed by a clean brooder box, and fresh corn and peas as a treat. Today I even stopped mashing them up. They are quite capable of doing it themselves. I'm so proud of their accomplishments at only 1.5 weeks of age.

Sunshine and Shadow are the names I've given them. Don't know their sex yet, but one is a little bit darker in color (feathers, bill, and feet) so I named it Shadow. Sunshine is a tiny bit smaller, so I think it may be a girl. If not we can always change the name to Sunny.

Very funny! I thought, however, that you were going to say that you added something new to their brooder or made some very slight change. My ducklings (and ducks) freak out over any little change, like using a different feeder or putting a towel over the bedding or whatever.

Mine were doing it too, but not as much anymore. I've been putting things onto it and different toys into it. Even switching up bowls a little bit. Their curiosity has taken over. They are now eager to explore. I think it is all a thing of exposure. Same thing with the dogs. They are allowed to sniff the duckies while I hold them. The ducks even check out the dogs. Today I thought I will have to hunt them down in the outdoor pen. I thought they will run around, if I tried to catch them. They surprised me by a) following me around by just calling, and b) standing still and letting me grab them to carry them home.

Today I was working in the adjacent bantam yard and I saw Bo (Aussie spot) tilting his head with a guarded look so I looked up to see if there was a hawk (or an airplane, or a butterfly... you get the picture) but there wasn't. Then I noticed over the next several minutes that he would only go to a certain point near their house and then turn around agitated and run down to the lower yard. He did this over and over and I was thinking "what the heck is wrong with him?" THEN I realized I had left the galvanized waterer ON TOP of their house after rinsing it out. He wouldn't go past that spot until I removed it

It's not only ducklings that are easy to freak out

My duck, and chickens, absolutely go mental whenever you get the broom out to sweep indoors, or outside.
We can't figure out why they are scared of brushes so much...spades, rakes, forks, trowels, wheel barrows...nothing....but a brush...they react like it's going to swallow them whole...and it dosn't matter what brush...big yard brush, small dustpan and brush...anything brush like.

No swish...you just have to pick the thing up....or if they think you're gonna pick it up.
We've had the critters all since they were a few weeks and at no point have they ever had a bad experience with a brush.
I thought it might be the brissles look animal like...but I'm clutching at staws with that one.
