MPC does ship from Meyer in Ohio, although their offices are in CT. My birds arrived on time and in good shape.
If you're the kind of person who can part with a chicken, I'd say just get a large order from one of the hatcheries who will ship early, and either put the extras up on craigslist, or raise them for several weeks until you can pick out your favorites and then sell them. The extra birds in the box will also keep them warmer on their chilly journey north.
I would fill out your order with Easter Eggers. Easter Eggers (which they will call "Americanas") were definitely in short supply from the hatcheries last year once spring got started. They're nice and cold hardy for VT, lay pretty green and blue eggs (usuall) and should be easy to get rid of. You may even be able to cover the cost of your shipping, or even your entire order.
