How to get nice pics?

Hope it's in the right catagory.
Every time I take a picture, I always get fussy or can't see the chicks color.

On my digital camera I have to focus it by half-way holding down the button and then click it all the way to actually take the photo.

take lots of pics and save the best. i have a dslr and it is fast but still doesnt get good pics every time so I take tons and sort through them keeping the best ones. Its especially hard when chickens seem 2 move just as u snap the picture...

I have tried a white background for dark chicks and dark for light chicks.

I push the button down halfway so the camera is focused and ready, then when the chickens are in a good pose, I make a soft little whistling noise or chirp sound to get their attention... they freeze for just a moment, so it's quick.
oh yeah, and sometimes really bright daylight isn't as good as a semi dark room with a good flash... I've gotten better pics in a darker room with flash now that I think of it.
