Most predators aren't very fond of loud radio music playing either so that might be another thing worth trying

I would not try music if the predators are no good with it then you can only imagine what they prey are feeling. Most predators aren't very fond of loud radio music playing either so that might be another thing worth trying![]()
Locking birds up is “not the only way”. It’s a matter of opinion. Animals can be trapped legally to prevent issues. For some people having a lot of birds loose actually helps with hawks because there’s that many more eyes out there looking around.
I don’t have too many layers but I have a few 6 yr olds and a 10 yr old dark Brahma hen that’s been free ranging every day of her life.
Locking them up isn’t the only way it’s just a lot more work to keep them safe so what should be said is most would rather not put in the effort so they’d rather just lock them up.
I know this is a few days old, but would you mind terribly showing a pic of your set-up? I think I've done something similar, -- but I am having a terrible issue with Copper's Hawks right now, and would like to see something "tried-and-true" -- thank you in advance. <3To the OP:
I really don't have the patience to read through the 8 pages of replies
We had several coopers hawks move in on our chickens and two things drove them away completely 1. We set some poles in the ground and criss crossed string from top to top randomly (you can pm me for a pic if you want) the the hawks/birds see it and know they won't have room to extend their wings to land. 2. For a few weeks I watched our open run religiously. They didn't get their meal and had to look elsewhere. It really discouraged them
I think if you have crows around you will have better luck with some black chickens in your flock. I have 2 Asian Blacks and the hawks don't seem to hang around as much. But as they get occassionally harassed by the crows I don't think they want to bother with something that may hassle them back. Will keep that in mind! So far, so good, though. That's what we need, everybody sharing their experiences. For the record, I replaced my lost roo with a Black Jersey Giant. He's 10 mo old and hasn't been tested yet. I have high hopes for him though.
