I was wondering if there's anyway to get a white egg layer from a brown or blue egg layer, or if you have to start with one of the parents with the white egg laying gene?

They have to have the white egg shell gene. Unless you know how to cause a mutation in that specific gene.

If you cross a chicken from a breed that lays brown eggs with one from a breed that lays white eggs, you would probably get hens that lay light brown eggs.

Why do you want to breed a brown-egg layer to get a white-egg layer?

I have no idea, but there are only 2 true egg colors, blue & white. Blue or green eggs have blue inside and brown eggs have white inside. Genetics is beyond me.

I am starting with brown egg layers and one blue egg layer and just wanted to see what variety I could get without having to buy more chickens.
