how to get your hen too go broody

hi

I have a flock of 12 11 hens 1 rooster the breeds are
1 leghorn
7 rhode island reds
1 barred rock
1 rooster
2 more not sure what the breed is one is a light brown the other is a bantem not a silkie but small and gray

they are 4 to 5 months old

I want to let one go broody but this is my first flock I got this flock when they were 2 days old and 5 hens are laying

Most laying hens are bred up so that they won't go broody, cause most people think that is a pain, if you are wanting lots of eggs. Bantams are more likely to go broody, especially silkies. Occasionally a hen will just go broody out of the blue, even if they aren't supposed too! So you might get lucky! A way to encourage chickens to go broody, is to put golf balls or fake eggs in the nest box. It makes them see all those "eggs" and think, 'oh those need to be sat on!' Good luck!

There's no way to make a hen go broody. If a hen wants to be broody, she will do it regardless of what you do. Your bantams are the best bet for future broodies. I would say they are young but one of my 5 month olds just went broody so you just have to wait and see.

Whilst I have read here on BYC that there are some things one can do, it would only work with hens that have been broody in the past or the breed has a propensity to do so. You may be better getting an incubator, to be honest as your leghorns and RIRs are unlikely to go broody.
