So the basic idea is a wire frame with heating pad over it and an insulator over the whole thing? The chicks just huddle under the frame like under mama?

Basically, yes.
Thru my multiple iterations I've found....
- it's better to have the pad under the frame.
- adjustable legs make things much easier.
- flat rather than curved will greatly increase the usable space.

Well...one of my hens went broody last weekend. She has been pretty determined all week, barely left her nest.
Yesterday, I set up a space just for her in the corner of the coop in a dog crate. We moved her there last night. She still seems determined. I have some fertilized eggs to slide under her tomorrow night. Crossing my fingers we can get some chicks that way.
