We believe our recovering peacock had gapeworm. After getting it treated at the vet for maggots that had began eating on him under his wing, we took him home. Kept him dry, clean, safe, and applied prescribed antiseptic spray and antibiotic cream. He was doing better. Eating, drinking, droppings, all okay. Then yesterday, we checked on him and he had his beak open. Trying to breathe. He was really struggling. Then made gasping noises. Gurgling noises. Shaking head, stretching neck. Then he passed out, then woke up again. Seemed like not getting air and seizure like behavior. We understand there is the medication for the water for prevention of gapeworm, but what about an instant way to treat the gapeworm blockage? Or how to get air into his lungs? Tube down trachea? How to do this? The vet is 2 hours away, so no time to take peacock there. Unfortunately our peacock died. We have more peacocks, geese, ducks, & chickens, too. We do not want this to happen again.😭😞😢🦚 simply heartbreaking. Thank you for your help. We appreciate any advice. We would be the ones treating him. So pet shop or feed shop is nearby to buy meds or other necessary products.😊

Sorry for your loss. Have you considered that your peafowl had a respiratory disease instead of gapeworm. Those are more common and can cause some of those symptoms that you saw in your bird. If you lose another bird, get a necropsy by your state vet to find the cause of death. To treat all of your birds for gapeworm use SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer, and dosage is 1/4 ml per pound given orally for 5 consecutive days. Here is a list of state vets if needed:
