My pullets are 2 and 3 week olds. Someone suggested that to hold the chickens, you shouldn't hold their feet. How is this done? Won't this cause stress to them because of the no support on the feet? Pictures please! Thanks.
In your mouth... How many you can hold depends on how big you mouth is.... ha ha ha.... (just kidding)..
make a three with your fingers... hand palm side up... the chick is to face your wrist with a shank between ring and middle and middle and pointer.. the keel of the bird resting you your palm
You of course wont make a three when holding the bird... your hand will be loosly cupped... you will have other hand over top of the bird...It is secure that way
I hold them like a football and their feet just sort of touch my shirt. Sometimes they grab my shirt with a toe. My right arm is around their right breast with my hand towards their neck on their left side.
What you do NOT want to do (ask me how I know
) is feed your pullets lots of water, starter, etc. then decide you need to pick them up and move them and ever so gently press too hard by mistake, on their bulging full crop. Because they will regurgitate slimy water all over your arm. Yep.
My friend also showed me to hold them in that cup way under them and then put their back against your chest. It's very soothing and secure for them. It has worked well if I needed to carry them around at all. I've had many fall asleep in my bosom lol
