How to identify male Khakis?

Thank you, I think so too! But I might be just a bit prejudiced!

I had an awful time identifying one of my hens as a female. And we had purchased sexed ducklings (after getting a 3:1 drakes to hens in straight run ducklings). Her quack was closer to male's and her head looked kind of dark. Also, she was really aggressive, fight the drakes off and bossing other ducks. But the quack finally changed, and she's laying. She's still bossy though - and very loud!

Thanks to all of you experienced duck folks who assured me that I did in fact have all girls. Here's an update... the 8 girls are now 26 weeks old and last week I started getting 7 every day... and finally for the past 3 days... EIGHT eggs! They are 100% productive and everyone lays an egg every single morning despite the fact that we are down to around only 9 hours of daylight each day and I dont provide any artificial light! My brother in law has had chickens for years and he laughed at me for getting ducks and he hasn't had eggs in weeks. Har Har now the wife's family is all desperate for duck eggs very funny:)

Hi Duckgirl... Im surprised your campbell girls arent still laying? I wonder why mine are? Should I expect them to tail off at some point? I thought they would lay right through the winter at this point since the days will only get shorter for 2 more weeks. Of course January and February will be colder but still the daylight will increase. What has the most impact on laying, cold temperatures or hours of daylight? My first winter with ducks, thanks.

How long did it take before your Khaki started quacking? I have 2 Khakis @ 10 weeks and the bigger duck displays a soft croaky whisper, but the smaller duck has never uttered a sound! These ducks were sexed but one can never count on that!

Blood spots in Eggs. I have 3 female Pekins and when they first started laying, there was some blood spotting in the eggs. I have read that when ducks begin to lay eggs this can be normal. It eventually stops and yes, these eggs are safe to eat.

I'm so glad this old thread came to the top. As I posted last week, I'm patiently waiting to learn if my Khaki Campbells are girls or boys and there were more good hints here. This breed is hard to determine since there is no, or very little, difference in coloration between males and females.

Your pictures are great! I have 2 sexed Khaki hens (I think they are hens) that are 11 weeks old and molting. The bigger Khaki duck emits a soft sound just like my male runner duck, but was sexed as a hen and looks just like the picture of your hens. The other khaki has never emitted a sound; not a croak or quack. Do Khaki's have a softer quack, than say pekins or runners? Which is more telling of their sex, the noise they make or waiting 5-6 months for the tail feather to appear-- or not?
