How to introduce dogs to chicks?

When I hatched some eggs before, my dog (med-large size mix)wanted to get in the brooder with them! The chicks were her babies. She was very protective of them. Always had to check on them. Let's see how she is when I get my new ones that are not hatched but are young.

Very true on how dogs have their own personalities.
Agreed. All animals have different personalities, as are people and their relationships with their pets.

So that there are no misunderstandings, I was merely stating how I trained the three dogs that are around my flock often, so that OP and anyone in the future would have another example. Discipline was implied when I stated that I’ve been training my dog since she was young.

All three had different personalities and they didn't learn at the same speed. The two dogs that I do not own, use to chase my birds and did not listen very well initially, especially the younger one. As stated earlier one has even killed 2 of my pullets becoming her chew toy. All three were salivating during the first several introductions. Two kept lunging at the birds that were in the coop. All of which was corrected on the spot. That all stopped once they learned I was in charge and the flock belongs to me.

Needless to say, common sense dictates.

I seem to have a different experience than others on here. I introduced my yellow lab to my chicks 6years ago, and it was just fine. At first, the dog was interested, but never a problem.
Last week I introduced my 8 month old lab/springer mix to my new chicks. Stella is very interested, but has had no problems. I will say that she tries to get them running so she can chase them, but has not harmed a bird in any way. And Stella is a stinker - not well trained...
I just held the dog at first as the chicks were released , then held her collar and let her get close and smell them. Slowly started trusting her.
That’s just my experience, good luck.

Hello, I'm raising my first batch of chicks soon and was wondering how I get my dogs (who have never been around many small animals) used to them from a young age? They are boxers and aren't aggressive twords other animals unless they feel threatened, and we are thinking if we introduce them young they can get used to them by the time they are older. Any tips or help?

We introduced our babies to our Lab mix right away and refer to them as her babies...lol. But she is the sweetest girl with them and just tries to nudge them with her nose a little. We’ve had ours for 3 weeks today andall is well between dog and chicks!! 🐶🐥🥰
