How to keep chicken poop from smelling so bad

You're using Sevin? And you're eating eggs from that coop? DE and pine shavings will work fine...Sevin is extremely toxic and a likely carcinogen. Hope you don't have any kids eating your eggs or produce.

there is certain flooring or material that u can put on the floor of the coop that keeps it from smelling so bad but also ashes keep away bugs also there is a certain fungal infection u can get on ur loungs from ingesting chicken poop fumes so make sure u r wearing a mask when cleaning ur coop if u do not want this infection.

I had a big load of chipped up wood delivered and dropped near my run. I use the deep litter method and started with straw. However, it did not encourage the bugs like the wood chips and, of course, the chickens LOVE the bugs who like to live in the chips. They are so excited when I toss in a new layer. I also use the chips in the bottom of my coop, again it harbors bugs like wood roaches which the chickens gobble up. I am out of DE and need to buy a 50 pound bag - searching for the cheapest supplier. Has anyone already done that research? I think I found the cheapest on Ebay - naturally the shipping is the most expensive part of the deal.

Edit: never mind the DE source question. I found 50# food grade locally at my feed store for $22.00!! Woo Hoo!!

This is what I do. I stir it up in the morning to fold in the poops from under the roost. Also, if I stir it around when they spill water, it dries fast and I don't get any mold problems. The trouble I am having is in the run. When it rains, it smells and it's not covered in poo, they have only been going into the run for a week.

Ddawn,
The pelletized? Is it safe if they eat it? Not trying to hi jack but this is interesting...I wanted to try using some lime in the fall in my duck run.As most duck owners know....they smell worse than a chicken! The area around the pool is always wet! I also wanted to try this with my yard to keep any odors from building....
To the OP...definitely keeping it DRY,DRY,DRY is a HUGE factor

I have a large run for my chickens but its starting to smell! At the moment as its quite new I've let them run the grass down, would it be best to put bark wood chippings down? There also seems to be a lot of flies in the run and the chicks poop is cleared out daily... any suggestions how to deal with this?
