Shade, shade, shade, natural or manufactured. Shade cloth draped over the top of run . Or make boxy frames and drape the shade cloth over top and side facing sun, birds can go under or not as they wish.

To keep my chickens cool I usually give them a shallow tray with ice cold water in it for them to walk in, and I put ice in their water bucket. I also give them cold treats (Watermelon, frozen grapes, apples straight from the fridge, etc). Another thing you can do is make them some mud. They will role around in it and get dirty, but it really helps to cool them off. Also provide them lots of shade. If they don't have a tree or a roof for shade, try making something for them.

We live in Gilbert so we know your pain. We are brand new to this chicken thing so we have been doing a lot of trial and error.
First, we have discovered they need access to plenty of water. That is the most important thing. Secondly, we have put up a shade canopy for them. We also will run the sprinklers on that side of the yard an extra time each day. We also freeze water in 2 liter bottles and put them around their water sources and they will stand on them or lay by them. We have also tried the above suggestions of cold fruit etc. We also have a large pan of shallow water they can stand in if they choose to that we add ice to every now and then...

If you have found other ways to do it, please let me know. We certainly don't want any of our new friends to melt due to the heat!

We are currently experiencing a heat wave in Cape Town. Temperatures are reaching a 104! I keep my chicks cooler by placing a fan outside their run, wetting the ground every few hours, providing a sea sand bath and obviously lots of shade and water! Good luck with keeping your girls cool!
