How to keep hens close to the coop?

My chickens have only been allowed out of the run a dozen times or so when I am working outside in the evenings over the last month. They always stuck close to the coop. Then we gave our rooster away over the weekend. Yesterday I let them out and they went further then before. Today I let them out and they went out to the road. I am guessing the rooster kept them close. What can I do to keep them from going too far?
