Hey y'all summer is flying by and winter will be upon us before we know it what are the best ways to keep my girls laying through the winter

I believe most will keep a light on on the coop to extend daylight to match that of summer and it works.
My grandmother didn't have that as an option so as soon as it got cold enough to start the parlor stove she would take old door mats, cover with a little dirt, place grass seed and sprinkle water. She'd place these under and behind the stove till they sprout then take the grass mats out to the chickens, she'd keep em rotating like this all winter and never went without eggs. Granted she didn't get the supply of summer but had plenty to feed her family and then some.
Haven't tried it myself but plan to this winter!:fl

Feeding them grass sprouts will not keep them laying all winter,
that must be coincidental and/or not the whole story and/or a selective memory.

It's all about the length of day, the amount of light they are exposed that trigger certain glands to in order to keep those hormones flowing so the ova will mature and be released.
Some pullets will keep laying thru their first winter, some will not.
Supplemental lighting can work....or not.
Here's a pretty good article on supplemental lighting.

Probably a coincidence...Thanks for the info. Although I know many people here who use sprouted grass in the winter and no lights and have good egg production all winter. I'm gonna try it this year and see what happens.
