How to keep Muscovys from flying off?

I have three muscovy ducklings that were born end of april. Once they grow wing feathers,how do i keep them from flying away. I live in the burbs(more or less) and only two blocks from the interstate. Can i clip the wing feathers just like chickens? I didnt want the last joint of their wings to be clipped of , that seemed cruel.

Hm, seems there is a lot of info around that Scovies tend to fly away. Mine never even attempted flying(or running, since I free range them) away, mine are tame, get food and water and never had a reason to I guess.
Ok, when I penned them, then the female wanted to come greet me and flew the fence, once around the house and then landed by my feet.
The male is too fat and heavy to go anywhere(he'll sit by the door hissing and bobbing his head), he can just dream, the girls have their wing clipped tho since without supervision free ranging is not allowed(coyotes, they killed at least a dozen of my scovies last year for flying the fence and grazing in our yard uinsupervised).


Yes, you can clip a wing just like you do with chickens.

so far i doubt they will ever fly with those tiny wings and huge bodies. they are like bumble bees,shouldnt be able to fly since the body mass is too big for the wing area -- but nobody told them that.

My muscovy ducks could fly. Even the male that has a body the size of my geese could fly a few feet up. The females could only fly about 8 feet up for a short distance. They kept flying over our fence so we had to clip them. They kept getting in our pool and didn't want them pooping in it. We decided to only clip one wing on each and it worked.

muscovies are not know to be big fliers if they prove to be fliers clip thier wings

They will fly, they will fly around your house, land on your roof and even sleep up there. Best way to keep them grounded is to clip their wings. They have tiny wings now but they will eventually grow. They seem to be the last thing to grow on a muscovy.
