How to keep snakes away from coop?

Ugh! I didn't dream of snakes being a problem...We've only ever seen lil ones - not even 1 a year since we have been here.
My chicks are 5 wks old and haven't even been in their coop outside an entire week yet...and I notice off the deck in our fenced in yard what I thought was a long stick...til it moved!
That thing had to be every bit of 6 foot long!!! Luckily it was leaving the yard and appeared to have been coming from the other side of the house through the opposite area the chicks are.
Man! Now I have to convince my husband we have to move and reinforce the coop/run!
I was so proud of myself for adding on 8sqft to the run last Saturday...and now he's gonna get so frustrated at me.
Hardware cloth...1/4" is that what we'll need to help secure it all up?

We just found 2 black snakes in our chicken houses. My husband carried them way down in the woods. I googled about getting rid of snakes and it said in several sites that they hate ammonia. Said to soak towels in the ammonia and lay them around the fence/house area. Ammonia smells horrible so I wonder if it could hurt the chickens. Gonna try it as snakes are my worst nightmare.
