how to keep the coop/run area as clean as possible

My chickens have a 5x7 covered run attached to their coop, which is floored with hardware cloth and has about three inches of playbox sand in it. I really like it- no smell, easy to scoop out poop with a kitty litter scoop. They also have a small dirt yard, and I scoop every morning when I clean the coop.

No smells or flies.

for the coop you could install poop boards underneath the perches. I did this and it cut down the cleaning considerably. I just scrape the poop off every other day or so into a bucket. I use a grill scraper and it works great.

I use straw in the covered run and when I clean it out I place the used straw over grass seed. It's like Miracle grow for grass!
