Hi- I've searched the site, and I'm sure the answer out there. I've lost 5 of nine of new chicks (I've had them 6 days, but started dying on day two). The were shipped during heat wave, and the source of them saying maybe got too hot during shipping (they are replacing them. Anyway, I'm pretty sure they have coccie. Yellow, runny stinking poop. Little puffed up chicks with wings hanging down. One had bad eye infection. Any how, I am removing remaining chicks, cleaning the brooder. I'm throwing bedding away, so it doesn't get in the ground, but need to kill the cocci before the water hits the ground. Do I use bleach? Thanks! Pam

Ok- I found the info on the Sulmet.
Too bad my feed store didn't have the gentler one. And I didn't know at the time that it was harsh.

I use bleach on all brooders. For killing Coccidia, I would use ammonia. I read somewhere that is the best thing to get rid of it. Sulmet is okay as a coccidia treatment but Corid is better. Sulmet only treats a couple strains of Coccidia whereas Corid treats for all of them. Sulmet has directions right on the bottle for treatment. I think it's something like full strength for the first two days and then half strength for the next so many. I am unsure of the length, I'm thinking 3 days.

Make sure you continue for the full course of treatment. If they start with symptoms after the treatment course is over, use Corid. Also, you might want to feed yogurt or some other form of probiotic.

Thank you. I called my vet yesterday for some, but he didn't call me back, and now he's closed for the fourth. When I was pretty sure he wasn't going to call before closing time, and went to the feed store. All they had was Sulmet. If he calls tomorrow, I will get something more effective and gentle if he has it. Thanks for the help and reply!
