I was given 2 pekin 9 week old hens along with 6 5 week old silkies. One of the pekins had a bad smell to it face. I seperated and then 2 of the silkies came down with same thing. I took them to a vet and was told it was coryza. I then gave all the chicks back to the person who gave them to me. I have older silkies in a seperate pen. Not to far away from where I was keeping the other chicks. I have put antibotics in there drinking water and am hopeing they havent caught it. I poured petrol on the ground where the chicks where and burnt infected area. I also used straight bleach on the cage and anything they may have touched. I have also spread agriculture lime everywhere. Do you think this is enough to get rid of the coryza bacteria. Do I have to do anything else Thanks

that might do it. Anything they have touched needs to be disinfected. You can buy coryza vaccine if you think one of the others caught it, vaccinate the rest of your flock.

I use Oxine AH that I ordered online. It's 200x more effective than Clorox and is safe to use on and around your animals. Here's an article about it:

I imagine someone will sell it in Australia. Good luck to you!

i AM CURIOUS
WHAT DID THE PERSON SAY WHEN YOU GAVE THEM BACK AND TOLD THEM IT WAS CORYZA?

THE BIRDS COULD AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN CULLED
AS THAT IS HOW THE RESPIRATORY DISEASE COMES ABOUT

with that said here is my thoughts
the respiratory disease is common because of p[eople selling off older chickens to new comers ( or giving away chickens that have been treated for the respiratory disease) New comers that do not realize that some birds will recover and their bodies learn to deal with the disease

then when movd to another farm they become sick and pass the disease germs thru the water and the air by coughing etc then the healthy chickens come down with it

thus the need NOT TO BUY OLDER CHICKENS or take birds with out questioning the person giving them away.
ALWAYS ASK ABOUT THE HEALTH IN LAST YR OF THE OWNERS BIRDS.

most folks do not realize people are not really interested in helping new ones (if they are, they do not realize that people can and will infect their whole farm of birds, from just getting the free birds.

Many are just interested in having a monatery amt to replenish their own flocks with new chicks
So they sell off their older chickens that have recovered from repsiratory disease and then do not lay as many eggs as the new pullets will

thus it is better to just buy chicks and wait for the new eggs

chickens best yr is the first full yr
they will lay upwards of 300 eggs
and then 2nd yr will only lay about 200-250 eggs
etc every yr older droping at least 50 eggs a yr off amt laid the yr before

sorry but this is the facts of the chickens life and story of why you can buy adult 1-1/2 to 2 yr old chickens or people are not alert to what they may be causing the new ones they try and help.

if at all any one has had birds with respiratory diseases and then they recover THEY WILL ALWAYS BE CARRIERS OF THE DISEASES

I am asked daily why so much respiratory disease in chickes now
well that is the reason, some one does not cull sick flocks but just makes the flock birds learn to live with the respiratory diseases

email me any questions

maybe do this for all the birds at once
I would start with the Vit E and Vit B complex with wet mash

THE DISEASE c will cause E.coli in the gut

put the Vit's in tis wet mash for all the chickens

A) chickens do get some upset in the gut with E.coli and then it goes toa nervous disorder
natural probiotic wet mash with Vit E and Vit B complex, as well as Vit C added immediately
basically the chicken has some nerve damage from the E.coli and the respiratory disease do this immediately
need neurolodigal vit E and Vit B complex for E.coli and the nervous disorder

(1) Also the apple cider vineager in water
2 tbsp per gallon of water till chickens are well and then 2 times a week for life
for one chicken use 1 tbsp of ACV
1 pint of water

(2 immediately give the chicken 400 mg capsule of liquid Vit E by cutting the end of the capsule and taking the vit E liquid and mix in wet mash probiotic .Vit B complex crushed and put in wet mash, Vit C crushed and put in wet mash

(2-B) total amt of capsules equals the total amt of chickens fed vit's multiply amt of recipe times amt of chickens fed it and the amt of vit's times amt of chickens given them

(3 also need to crush a vit B complex pill in tabsp then
put it in the chickens wet mash after it is disolved, also Vit C

(3-C) then give this to the chickens twice a week for two weeks should see much improvement

(4 Do all three Vit's twice today then for 7 days till you see some improvement in the chicken

(5 today I would see if the chicken will eat a wet mash with the Vitamins E and B complex and Vit C
JUST MAKE 1/2 OF THE WET MASH GIVEN HERE FIRST TIME WITH THE VIT'S

(-B) THIS IS FOR ONE CHICKEN
natural probiotic wet mash
2 tbp of dry crumbles
3 tbp of milk sweet, sour or buttermilk
1 tbsp of non flavored yogurt
2 tbsp of apple sauce
put it on top so the chicken can smell and see it
mix good and put the
vit E liquid as directed in the wet mash
and crumble the Vit B complex tablet in a tabsp and crush the Vit C add to the wet mash
each chicken should get 2 tbsp of the wet mash with vit's
**BESURE AND MIX VIT'S VERY GOOD IN WET MASH***

(6 Do this twice a day for 7 days to see if the chickens are better
then do this once a day for another week then once a week for a while
this should give the nervous system some stability and cure the bad E.coli in the gut also the respiratory disease should be better

(6-A) they should clean it up in 20-30 minutes

(7 you can email by PM for more information and include this info so I remember what
also if you go to the top of your PC you will see the first line and that is the URL for your post
just copy it and email it back to me so I can read it for a update

Coryza is a disease that can NEVER be cured. They will always be carriers and infect your whole flock, even when NOT showing symptoms. The best thing to do is cull all birds and disinfect EVERYTHING they COULD have touched. Bleach WILL kill everything and there is no need to go buy Oxine when bleach is readily available and cheap. This site is THE BEST:

I just wanted to second the oxine recommendation. Just know that to remove microbes, the disinfectant product must come in contact with the microbe.

Another fine method (after using the oxine or trifectant or similar) is the use of very dry course sand as a floor versus soil. Microbes have a very hard time staying infective as long in sand. As a result not only will your flock stay healthier but the run areas will smell much better and are easier to keep clean and look attractive as a result.

Incidentally, bleach unfortunately has limits as a disinfectant. It becomes ineffective when paired with dirt. It's better than nothing, but of course not a guarantee. (We do use it alot here despite.)

Really its best use is on non-porous items such as the waterers, feeders, etc. And then don't use hot water. Use hot water and soap to clean them. Rinse very well (to avoid fumes that happen from mixing soaps and bleach.) Then soak for 15 minutes in a solution of 1 part bleach to 6 parts tepid (not hot) water. Then rinse very well and dry.

If you can dry in the sunshine, all the better as it's a brilliant disinfectant as well!

And boy do I have to agree with MandyH on MSUcares! I've loved that site for years and years.

By the way, preventative antibiotics for coryza aren't recommended - particularly if you don't know which antibiotic to use. They're not all effective for coryza, even if the label says you can use it.

Also, since you've given antibiotics, you'll now need to give probiotics and likely you cannot use yogurt unless you're not using a -mycin or -cycline drug (or if you discontinue the drug). You'll need acidophilis capsules or Probios dispersible powder. You don't want to develop a secondary digestive bacteria or yeast (fungal) issue because of indiscriminate antibiotic use.

Hopefully your birds, if they never showed the symptoms, never were exposed. I'll cross my finger that this is the case. Give the ground a rest for a while before putting birds back in.
