i ned some help. i am new at this and at chickens. we had a hen die this morning wondering if i missed any clues of sick birds can anyone help please. thanks

all my hens look good. i am new at this. some of my hens are turning 6 months old. they are isas. i was getting 5 eggs a day then i brought home 6 more bird that are about 4 months old and the stress did slow my production down. but everyone was acting fine. this particular bird was not coming when i called she just wanted to stay under my deck which i thought was really weird all my girls come when i call. and then the next morning she was on her side dieing. her butt was dry and clean, no wounds, feet looked good face looked good legs and feet looked good so this does not make sense. so i started looking for anything with the other girls and i did notice a really loose dropping but the rest of the dropping the birds are having are basically normal. i went ahead and antibiotic the hens. the reason i got more hens was we did not know we orginally had a rooster- he nevered crowed and i guess i did not 2 and 2 together well i finally realized and was watching his behavior and seemed calm no crowing still then i think he tryed mating with one of my hens and she was small her leg turned up broke so we caged her and she did fine but a week after her resting i think she got an infection and died so i took the rooster back and lost a hen so i was down to only 6 birds. all my new ones seem healthy happy girls and the older ones do too. i just don't want to over look anything and loose more birds. we really enjoy them more than we thought we would. with all this being said hopefully you could give me some advice.thanks

no . the lady had bought them as babies and decided after having them she was too busy for them so did not want them any more. her birds were clean and appear healthy. she did not have a big flock 9 i think i took 6. they were antibioticed when she got them so i seen no reason to do it again they had not been around any other birds. and all the birds are still seeming happy and healthy now still so i am wondering if maybe the hen that died was egg bound. what signs should i watch for if she is egg bound?

Chickens act like they are fine until they drop dead. It's a survival mechanism. I'm sure there's nothing you could have done to save her.

You can send the body of the chicken to your State Vet for a necropsy in some states, and they will tell you what the bird died of.

Unless you know what specific disease you are treating, using antibiotics is a bad idea. If your chickens have a fungal infection, it will make it much worse and may kill the chickens. If they have a virus, it will do nothing. If they have a bacteria, it might kill the bacteria or it might not, because different antibiotics are formulated to kill different bugs.

If you do not treat the animals with the antibiotics for ten days you risk killing the weak bacteria and giving the stronger ones the chance to reproduce, producing a super strain of bacteria that cannot be killed with antibiotics. That's why Terramycin no longer works on chickens.

One way to tell if a hen is eggbound is to watch closely and see if she is laying eggs. If you know a chicken is not laying eggs, you can feel her abdomen for any swelling, heat, lumps, and so on by running your hand from just behind her breastbone to her vent.

Sorry about your chicken.
