if you want to have a Small area of grass remain available you can make some Grazing Frames for the run.
Basically you make a 2x4 frame then staple HW cloth to one side of it and lay it on the ground HW cloth side up. If you did this while there was still grass then you're good to go at this point. IF you build this after the grass is already gone, just lay it on the ground and throw some grass seed through the HW cloth. It will grow up and they can eat what comes through the screen but they can't gett at the ground to dig up the plants.
