I would love to hatch chicks the natural way: let a hen hatch and raise chicks. My hens very went broody (I only had them for a year). What should I do to induce broodiness? Someone told me I should make a dark space to let hens feel more secure and private, others say some breeds will never go broody. Anyone knows what breeds go broody easy? Any other advice?

Thanks in advance.

Breeds reputed to have a greater chance of going broody are silkies, Cochins, Orpingtons, and Brahmas.

You can't make a hen go broody. Some people suggest not gathering eggs for a while to prompt hens to go broody.... But that is a really good way to let eggs go to waste.

Broodiness is a combination of broodiness back in the hen's genetics somewhere and changes in hormones.

Many, many hens never go broody.
