eekk. That's a wee bit wrong Shawn he he! It's RIR roo to white hen (any white hen that carries the silver gene). The red in the male gene bred with the silver gene some how makes the sex easy to tell at hatching. Don't mean to disagree with ya, but it's switched he he!

I first read this and agreed, then reread it and was like...wait a min! LOL!

It's for some reason the red that causes it. RIRs are great roos to have around i've learned!

Yeah, I better make that clear - editing it late may not be a good idea

Buff works as a solid-colored sire, I'm told.

But, it's the black/barred that piques my curiosity

So far I'm going for
RIR Roo to WLH hens
RIR Roo to Barred Rock hens
And if a buff works, maybe an Orphington Roo to WHL hens hrrrm! ya think it'd work???

There's where I need someone with more knowledge of that "silver factor" gene. I don't see how Leghorns work in a sex-link cross.

They are used but perhaps it is a special Leghorn.

To me, the RIR or other red and a Barred Rock hen looks like the easiest for most backyard folks.

But, there are some of the "silver factor" varieties of hens that are not uncommon and folks might want to go that way too.

I crossed my American Game rooster that is black breasted red to White leghorn hens and got sex link chicks.
The pullets were darkish and the roos were yellow at hatch.
The grown chickens are, hens red with white under feathers.
Roosters are white with red shoulders.
Also crossed the same rooster to barred rock hen, the hens are black with reddish hackle feathers and the roos are barred.
The chicks were roos large white spot on head pullets all black.
Same rooster crossed on black Australorp hens, the roosters are
golden duck-winged, the hens are black with golden hackles.
So Im thinking that roosters like welsummers would do the same.
I'm going to try it out.

You can also use a New Hampshire Roo also. I am doing the same thing this spring. I have my order in but had to change the place I'm getting my RIR Roos. McMurry only carries RIR production types. I cancelled that order and getting my RIR's from a breeder. I have friends that want the sex-links. I want the RIR's for myself and the New Hampshires for myself. I also am getting some others also.
