lol to be honest when i first got chickens when they were 2 months old i gave them eggshells to give them a boost of calcium..... and then i thought about it and was like *OH CRAP* LOL Thankfully they dont eat their eggs xD

One quick question about the treats. I have no idea how old mine are. I got them today from Tractor Supply. They have had chicks for about 2 weeks now so I'm not sure if they are 2 or 3 weeks old or a little older. Is it ok to start giving them the eggshells? My mom told me to toast them in the oven and crumble them up really good and put it out for them. Right now they are in a tote ( a really LOOONNNGG tote) with a heat lamp, cedar shavings, food and water. I have one that has pasty butt but just read the article about getting rid of it. But I want to start giving them treats either today or tomorrow. So Is it ok to go ahead and give them the eggshells, scrambled eggs, veggie scraps, etc? Thanks for your help!

I'm sure someone else will reply but from what I understand they souldn't have any extra calcium in their diet at a young age. Maybe a pic or description of how feathered out they are we could give you a better idea of their age. There is another section of the forums on feeding that might have more info that you are looking for.

You really shouldnt give them egg shells ever..... and it is not safe to give chickens under 8 weeks treats of any kind......... Also tractor supply usually sells their chicks within 4 days, so i HIGHLY doubt they are older then 1 week old...

Cedar is toxic for chickens, switch them over to pine bedding.

Hey Yall,
I was wondering about this myself. This is my first time with chicks. Mine are a week old today. I picked them up a week ago tomorrow. I am the only one who messed with them. I do sit by the brooder and I do talk to them, but anytime I have to open the brooder box it clean out the water or fill the feed they scramble to the fathest corner and bunch all together like they are scared to death. I have not held them at all.. I did lay my hand in ther ethe first day with food in in my palm and they ate out of my hand but they have not done it since. I have to change the bedding prpabably tomorrow and I am so cared Im gonna freak them out to the point the stress may hurt them.
What should I do? I talk to them sit by them but still they seem so scared.

Mine behave the same way. But today, I took the 3 oldest ones outside for the first time (they are 5 weeks old and mine for a week and a half). I put them on the ground and sat down to watch them do their thing. Do you know, within 10 minutes, they were all in my lap!! I love it!!

This one had to be put off of my lap several times. She was there to stay, lol!

awwwwww cuteness!!!!!

mine moved into the livingroom today, into a big fancy new brooder and they are scared to death. I am broken hearted, I hope they feel better soon! :(
