How to make your chicks not scared of you

I am guilty of cuddling right away! I am madly in love with my babies!

We cuddled right away too. We would put feed in our hands and they would come to get it. They also liked shiny things and would peck fingernails and rings. As grown-ups. they have no fear and little respect (rooster could use a little fear)

My chicks are 8 days old today and are still a little standoffish. 1 comes running everytime I put my hand in and actually likes its back stroked. The rest run and huddle in fear untill they get used to me sitting and watching. If I move to get up they run and huddle again. Im trying to feed them nothing but good medicated chick starter untill after thier 2 week birthday. I think once they get a taste of a big fat mealy they'll come around. I think the want some meat bad. I saw a housefly fly into the brooder and all of them went crazy trying to catch it.

When y'all say meal worms, do you mean the ones in the bags at the store or do you mean the live ones? I bought a small bag of the "Happy Hen Treats" yesterday and my chicks won't have anything to do with the meal worms. Should I get live ones instead? Sorry if I sound like an idiot, have no clue about treats!!

I bought the Live Meal worms!! I started a meal worm farm, at the present I have beetles, but with the way my 36 chicks in the brooder reacted I ordered more. I ordered mine on line. I just looked at on-line Petco and 5000 is just over $30.00.
I ordered 3000. You can order as little as 500.
The cost of the meal worm will pay YOU back in enjoyment!!!

DW and I have 8 new-bees in another brooder and they love the meal worms also!! Those chicks are just a week old!!

i was wondering abotu handleing the chicks, i have been handling them but dont let them out of my hands when out as im not sure how toxic the poo would be to our infant and toddler, do you guys clean it off the floor with bleach or just soapy water? i wash my hands every time after handling the chicks with soap and water. but am not that sure its enough, have not been pooped on yet. but have cleaned the brooder so have been exposed the the poop some.

thanks, trying to safe for the kids.

If there is not a problem with your birds then the chance of disease is minimal. Washing is the best. I would limit the use of any chemicals if you plan on coming in contact with the birds. Keep the children germs with the children and the bird germs with the birds.... That's the way we are going and all seems to be good.

hey yall,
chicks are now just over 2 weks old and growing like weeds! I have started to give them some mealworms and now they dont freak out so much, They will actually stand on my hand.. pretty cool. they are funny to watch they stretch their necks up and are almost tall enough to see over the top of the brooder box.. pretty funny to watch.

Wattsjadajoe what a beauty!!!

Corn!!! Cold from the can!! I laugh out loud at the sheer madness of what goes on with 17 chickies and a handful of corn!!!
