My four beautiful girls are all fluffed up and happy as can be (Pilgrim Goslings) and I am wondering when the best time is to start grazing them. I have a large bottomless cage I can move around for them so that they are safe. I have read that you can graze them as early as a few days old but wonder what other peoples thoughts are on this? They hatched out yesterday.

Right now I have them on a duck starter crum 22% with brewers yeast on top and fresh water right beside.

Thanks for any tips!!

I provide well-chopped pasture greens (grass, clover, plantain, dandelion) and chick grit by day 2, and take them on short walks to "graze" shortly thereafter. They begin, as @Goosebaby mentioned, by noodling/playing with the growing greens in the first few days, but are actively ripping at smaller plants by 4-5 days, in my experience. I also raise Pilgrims. 🙂

This is prime grazing season, so, weather permitting, I'd get them on (short) pasture in a secure enclosure for at least a short while daily until they get bigger...which will happen before you know it. And having them on grass also means less poop in the brooder! 😉

Thanks guys! My partner is picking up grit #1 today so tomorrow morning I will take them out to graze them a bit. Do I give them the grit in the area I'm grazing them? Or just free choice in their brooder.

At that age I sprinkle in the grass and leave free choice in the brooder :)
