Since dog is young, you should be able to train. my shepherd chow mix was 2 when I got chickens. I walked on a leash around chickens every chance I got. As soon as he focused on chickens, I gave correction, said no and kept walking. when we walked and he paid no attention was the time to try off leash. I did lose 2 chickens but that was 8 years ago. today the dog is their biggest protector. I even had one Banty that would sit next to him and peck bugs off him. Before you take dog around chickens, make sure he completely knows the word NO.
