How to rig the duck bathtub to drain

I'm not sure how to go about this drain for the ducks pool. I don't want my hand to go in the gross duck water. I can't find a stopper that would cover the entire hole. I'm planning on getting a plastic gutter splash guard to out under the tub. There will be more rocks around and underneath the tub.

Plumb the drain back in and have it run through a hose or pvc pipe, then put a ball valve out on the hose that you can manipulate from outside.

Our duck pen has an old sunken stock tank, then the 1.5" PVC drain line runs buried below grade. There is a cover/housing for the valve and the water eventually runs out the side of a hill. We can fill with the hose through the fence and drain without having to open the pen. Poke me tomorrow evening and I can get pics, even though it's dry for winter.
