How to safely give oral meds

What is the safest way to give oral meds to chickens. I know you have to be careful not to let it go into their lungs. What’s the best technique?

Edited to add: for a pill, just pull down on the wattles and pop it in. Takes some practice but once you get the hang of it, it's actually quite easy.

Personally, I use a small spoon, because of habit, but a syringe works great.
