How to set a broken toe?

It would probably help reduce pain & help it heal faster if you can put an ice pack on it for 15 to 20 minutes every few hours for a couple days.

I would try to be sure she's getting good nutrition to help her body's healing, too.

There are also instructions on Toe Taping and Chick Shoes on the Poultry Podiatry page on the website linked in my sig below, & one or both of those treatments might be helpful.

I'm sorry she got hurt & hope she heals well. That is sweet you have brought her in, & it should help that you are keeping her from moving around a lot.

Thank you for this information! My chick that I have wants to roost on the edge of her box (she can reach it too.). Should I get a taller box to prevent her from jumping? It's just a toe on her right foot that is injured, but I don't want the injury to get worse. Also, I clicked on the link and I'm quite impressed by your site!

Thanks for your kind words

I agree with you that it would be good to keep her from roosting while her toe's healing. A taller box sounds wise, or some sort of wire or other non-flammable cover that would breathe enough that heat wouldn't build up in the box & overheat your chick.
Let us know if her toe heals ok.

No problem :3 I have had this chick in my room for 2 days, and she is now walking on her foot. Her limping has stopped, but I am still keeping an eye on her.

I'm guessing her toe will need somewhere between 2 1/2 to 5 weeks to heal well enough to not be vulnerable to easily breaking again. Is her toe taped and/or in a chick shoe or are you just trying to restrict movement? I'm thinking she's going to need some sort of splint for the toe to heal in the correct position.

There are tips on re-integrating her with the rest of the you chickens on the Flock Peacekeeping page on my site, too.

Best wishes

Hi again! I am just trying to keep her from moving too much. I have her plus another chick in the box just so there isn't one "new" chicken in my flock. I have tried keeping splints on chickens but it didn't really work well. Her toe isn't that bent; now that I look at it I think it's more of a sprain than a break. I am keeping her off of it, and I am using some healing oils on her foot. It seems to help, 'cause she's been peeping a lot

Thanks for the wishes, I need them.
