Hey all. My darling derpy dented duck, Darla started limping last night. It took me a little bit to figure out what foot was bothering her since she is a bit crooked but turns out it's her right foot. Looks like the joint of one of her toes is really swollen where it connects to her "palm".

My guess is she stepped in a ground squirrel hole, tripped over something or otherwise got her foot stuck in something somewhere and hurt it in the subsequent panic of trying to get out.
She's eating normally and trying to move around to forage with her friends but I can tell she's hurting

Anyone have any experience, ideas, suggestions for splinting her foot and/or other treatment options? I am fairly certain she's not going to let me ice it 😂.
I am of course going to limit her free range time to try and keep her off it for a while.

I am not sure splinting is necessary nor that it would be effective. You might be better giving her meloxicam, for pain relief. (Do not use ibuprofen or other human pain killers as they can be toxic to ducks.)

I recently made splints for a duck with neurological problems causing the feet to ball up. I made a paper template from the duck's foot, and cut out splints from a pair of old, thin Dr Scholl shoe liners. I used waterproof adhesive tape from my nearest pharmacy and wrapped the foot lightly in the human equivalent of vetwrap (self adhesive bandage, also from my nearest pharmacy)
