I have some quail in chicken run (secured and netted), when I'm going in to top up their feed, water, clean stuff etc I try to watch to make sure they're not close cause they end up taking flight. Well, today I missed one and it flew straight up and slammed into the wire. Blood everywhere. It seems to have broken one of its feather quills, but other than that it doesn't seem that bad.... how do I stop this from happening again though? I've heard of them snapping their necks from doing stuff like that. Do I need to add more hiding places for them so they don't feel the need to fly upwards? Can you clip their wings maybe? Or are quail just naturally suicidal?

How tall is the netting???? What time are you going out???? I’ve found that they are more flighty at dusk. Occasionally I have a few dummies that are just flighty all the time.

More hiding places certainly wouldn't hurt. You could also put a bit of low hanging cloth or netting under the roof so they hit that and slow down before they actually hit it.
