Hello,

I've had an issue with storing my chicken feed. I keep them in big tin trash cans outside so no critters can get in. However over the past few months if I do not use the feed it gets moldy within couple weeks? seems a little water gets in. How do you store chicken feed?

Thanks
Jessica

Do you have a shed or garage that you could store it in the corner of? I put mine in my basement.

I have recently reconsidered the tin bins outside approach. I would no longer recommend it. I’ve been finding droplets of water on the inside after a rain, but more concerning, one morning I found the lid on the ground, the feed bag open and feed spilled everywhere. So not only are those bins not watertight, but they’re not critter-tight either... I’ll be clearing out room in the basement for it.

I keep my feed in a spare room near the back door.
I used to store outside in a metal can in a storage area inside coop.
But it's hot and humid in the summer and cool and damp in the spring and fall.
So inside my house it's at room temperature year round. GC

Moisture uptake caused by contact with high humidity air. Store in dry locating inside airtight can. Avoid having feed chilled and the brought into contact with warmer high humidity air.

If stored in a feed shed, then a night light may be enough to prevent condensation under some conditions,

I found that current metal trash cans have holes at the rivets -- I had to silicone those.
The plastic cans had to be checked carefully before purchase, they tend to have holes at the handles and seams. Cans with wheels have holes.
I have also had rats eat through the bottom edges of plastic trash cans.
I found some cleaned 30 gallon heavy plastic barrels, they are working well.
I use some 55 gallon drums but only for storage because, at 5'2", I can't scoop anything out of the bottom without either tipping the barrel or falling in.
I am currently considering using a cutting torch to remove about 1/3 of the large barrels...

I use tin garbage cans but I keep them in the garage attached to the coop. If the coop wasn't attached to the garage, I would've built a small lockable closet sized compartment attached to my coop for the tin garbage cans.
