Not sure if these goes here! But...
I have a 9 month old rooster (Gordon), a mix rooster of what I do not know.!
I also have 7 hens in my flock, and plan on adding a few more hens (I couldn't resist!!) All of my chickens are kept as pets

But...he is not the type of rooster that I can scoop up in my arms and carry him around, but he is not aggressive either. How could I create a tame rooster out of him? He'll come to me (VERY carefully though!) and eat from my hands, but other wise he'll leave me alone.

Some of the hens I have let me carry them around as well, but lately when I reach down to pick one of them up, he runs towards me and tries to 'flog' me (if that's how you use the word!).

Any tricks on how to make him more lovable?! Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks

Pick him up. Alot. That is about all you can do. All he is doing when he is flogging you is protecting his girls. It's his job. If you pick him up too... he will learn that you aren't hurting any of them. Sounds like a good rooster to me!

A keeper. Just remember and respect who he is to them. You have to pick him up and show him that he may protect them, but you protect all of them.

ahhh...'the taming of the Roo!'

(think of this with a Scottish accent and it if fuuuunny!)

there is a method where you should grab the roo and hold onto him tightly till he settles down. carry him around for a little while will help to tone down the attitude some as well. he'll see you as the dominant rooster.

also, have you tried to walk towards him when he has tried to go for you? it's a way to show that you are bigger and can flog his fanny just as much as he might try to do to you!

i would also take some treats to throw at him when you try to pick up a hen. that way he would be interested in telling his ladies that there are good treats and that you aren't that bad after all-you are food bringer!

Thank you for your help! I will certainly try this. I have to say the idea of me picking him up does cause a little worry, but I'll get over it

Does anyone have any experiences with this that they could share? Thanks!

I pick mine up from behind and above... put your hands with your fingers pointed down on both sides of him with your thumbs over top... this will hold his wings down so he doesn't fly. Then tuck him up to your body, slide your now free hand under his chest... kinda between his legs... and he should be calm at this point. Keep his wings tucked with your one hand and support his weight with the other.

There are other ways to do it, of course. This is the way I do it. They are calm and don't fuss a bit once you support their weight.

You can also try to be around him more and talking with him. Picking him up from behind will kind of prevent him from pecking at you before you have got him. I just slide My left hand underneath him and place My righ hand on there back at the same time. Kinda like scooping them up ^^ Since he takes treats form your hand I wouldnt say that hes in that bad of shape. The flogging issue is not My cup of tea. I never take kindly to a roo that is trying to flog Me..
