How do I tell the gender while still young chickens?

Unless they are sex link chickens then it is basically impossible to accurately sex them when they are under 5-6 weeks. How old are your chicks? What breeds do you have?

As they age, watch for large, red combs, slow feathering and pointy tail, sickle and saddle feathers.

How do I tell the gender while still young chickens?

If they are an auto-sexing breed or sex-link hybrids you can sex them by color from hatching. Otherwise you will have to wait until they are 5-8 weeks old depending on the breed. At his point cockerels combs will grow larger and redder than those of pullets whose combs do not redden up until shortly before they begin laying. Depending on the breed, at 12-18 weeks, the cockerels will begin showing long pointed saddle, hackle, and sickle feathers that will be lacking on the pullets.
