How to tell if a chick with Crazy Chick Disease will get better

That's okay, I had to look up Crazy Chick, too [though my search engine is ecosia.org, not google - they plant trees in deforested rain forest areas when you use their search engine, and yes, I try to plug it whenever I can, LOL]. I wonder if that is what my house hen had when she was little, then? She never had the classical wry neck so much as, when she was tiny, managing to go into a fit and tipping herself completely upside down, head over heels, and the Vitamin E and B Vitamin complex helped her tremendously! She is a bit mentally deficient (though for chickens, that does take some doing, I know, lol) and is nearly blind. As long as things aren't changed around her, she does fine. She hasn't had any fits of tipping over since she was about 12 weeks old (although she does still have the name Tipsy). She does recognize my voice, and if I only come up to her, she looks at me, and can't really recognize me unless I speak, but she does know where to look to find my face. So she's not completely blind, but she can't see enough to regularly manage to hit a treat or crumbles that I have in my hand. That takes her a bit to zero in on, to be able to find and eat. But, anyway, if it was Crazy Chick, and the definitions sound like it very well could have been, she does have an enjoyable life, though she could never actually be out in a coop and run, or especially not free-ranged. She's spoiled rotten, lol!

I'm sorry to hear about your chick.

I'm not sure how much vitamin E she would be getting with wheat germ oil and the nutri-drench combined.

I would try 400IU Vitamin E along with 1/4 tablet of B-Complex for a week to see if that makes a difference. Eliminate the Selenium and give her egg instead.

There is no way to know if she will recover or not. All you can do is try vitamin therapy and see how it goes. Re-evaluate daily as to the quality of her life, it may be kinder to let her go if there is no progress.[/QUOTE

Thank you. That's good to hear and I'm glad your chick does well. I'm more than willing to spoil Cleo and know we will have to make a special private run for her (the rest of our girls are free range) if she makes it.

Thank you! The nutritionist at Sprouts recommended wheat germ oil but I went this morning and will switch to straight Vitamin E instead. Also got B complex. Do you just crush the B complex up and add it to the food?

Yes, you can crush the B-Complex and add it to the food. Vitamin E, prick the capsule and squirt the oil in her beak.
Can she eat/drink on her own at all or are you having to hand feed her.

There are B Complex vitamis that are also gel-caps. I noticed one brand of it as I was wandering the pharmacy waiting for a prescription to get finished. When I got home, I looked it up.

Couldn't one note how many drops is in one gelcap, and then dose per drop?

Update: I've been treating with 400 iu vitamin e per day as well as the B Complex. Cleo is much improved, but not 100%. How long should I continue to treat with the vitamins? Thanks!
