We had been planning on getting our 9 month old female spayed as soon as possible. She was almost done with her heat but our male broke out and got stuck with her. We're all very upset about this and really need to know how to tell if she's pregnant.
Our male is now locked up in the kennel and will be staying in there.

Does it really only take one time for her to become pregnant?

I nearly broke my hand by punching the wall in anger but finally got all my frustrations out.

Yes they can get pregnant by one mating. There I'd a shot your vet can give within the first few days after mating to block the pregnancy.

Otherwise you will need to watch for mammary development, an enlarged vulva, behavioral changes, and an increasing belly. Some dogs can experience a false pregnancy, so be aware of that.

Blocking the pregnancy won't harm our female will it?

I'm not trying to be mean (seriously) but why wasn't the male neutered before the female was due to be spayed?

Blocking the pregnancy or just getting her spayed in 1 week will do. No harm to mom (except what naturally occurs with a spay surgery)

If you can, I'd take her to the vet to get the pregnancy blocked. It won't hurt her, no. She might be a little hormonal for a few days, though? I take progesterone pills, which are a very low dose, and they make my emotions a little funky sometimes. I kinda suspect a progesterone shot would make someone's emotions a lot funky. Not sure what it would do for a dog. Much easier on her than pregnancy, though!
