How to tell if its a hen or rooster chick.

Hi. First, thanks for allowing me to be a part of this site. I have owned chickens before, and love them. I've had many kinds, including Blue Andalusians, Copper Marans, Domineckers, and bantams. I am about to get a couple of Buff Orphingtons, and an Amercauna chicks, just hatched, and want to know how to tell if I'm getting hens. I know you can tell by the pinfeathers, but when you look at the pinfeathers, how can you tell which is male, and which is female?

You wait until they are older.

If you want to be sure you buy females you should buy sex linked chicks.
Orpingtons and Easter Eggers are not sex linked.
 
Welcome to our FUNomenal community!

The only sexing done on day old chicks that is with 90% accuracy is vent sexing. It can be very dangerous to the little ones, so please leave it to the professionals!

I would recommend you take pictures of your chicks in 4 to 6 weeks and post them in the Breed and Gender forum and let the members help you identify the pullet and cockerel characteristics of the birds.
