I have a chicken that doesn't lay. I know it could be related to health issues other than age, but it got me wondering.. how can one tell an old chicken from a young one? With dogs it's fairly easy, the first thing I would check are the teeth! But with chickens, it doesn't seem that easy ;)

Thanks!

Chickens are much tougher to tell. Some give always are 1) leg color 2) scaly leg. This is not a sure way to determine but can tell you a little bit at a quick glance.

Wish ya the best.
Leg color can indicate whether they are laying or not on some breeds.....but not necessarily their age.
Scaly legs indicate a scaly leg mite infestation....again, not an indicator of age.

Sorry, but I don't know how to tell the age of a chicken.
'Rare as hens teeth' and their feathers don't go gray soooo?????

As a hen gets older the leg does color fades. For example a white leghorn has BRIGHT yellow legs as a pullet but this fades as the years roll by. As stated above not a scientific way to tell age but an indicator. As a hen or rooster matures the scales on their legs are more pronounced. Again just at a glance can be an indicator but I don't know how. There are some good threads on this here on BYC.

Oh will check for other threads, sorry.

Their legs are yellow, bright and super soft! Thanks for the infos :)
